Do all people in the world have rights? Although this principle is not consistently practiced today across the globe, there is now a widespread consensus in discourse affirming universal human rights. But why? Why should all human beings possess rights? This book presents the Islamic response to this question by drawing from the classical literature of Islamic law, or fiqh, and providing a comparative analysis of different Islamic schools of law alongside modern approaches to the issue of rights.
